As things stand our goalkeeping dilemma is no different from the one at the end of last season. So, who will be number one come Sheffield Utd at home on Saturday 10th August 2019?
Boruc has signed a one year contract extension, nobody wants Begovic and Travers is still only a few games into a promising Premier League career. So who would you make the number one choice? We really can’t make up our mind.
We like Boruc, but as he approaches 40 is he ready for another season in the Premier League. We say yes, but surely he is only a stop gap. We cannot see him being number one for the whole season. Begovic should be first choice but as he proved last season he’s not a great option. Has he suddenly got back on good terms with Eddie? Has he come back stronger and more focused? We prefer that he gets sold and we get him off the payroll. He earns too much (£70,000 pw : www.spotrac.com) to be sat on the bench. Mark Travers definitely has potential, but do we really want him to be learning on the job? The Premier League is a harsh environment and perhaps a season on loan at a Championship club would be the best move for him and the club.
So this leaves us with an obvious gap for a new number one to come in and make their mark. But who?
Jack Butland is a name that has been bandied around ever since he stated that he wanted to play Premier League football. But, the alleged asking price of £30m is a sticking point. It seems AFC Bournemouth aren’t prepared to meet the asking price and are looking elsewhere. Or are they? (Of course they are).
Simon Mignolet has been mentioned at a price of £15m. Not sure how we feel about this one? Decent keeper, but would he offer anymore than what we have? Undecided.
Bartlomiej Dragowski is a Polish 21-year old keeper who spent the second half of the season at Empoli in Serie A. This gives him more experience than Travers, and in a top league. Maybe he is the to take a chance on?
