AFC BOURNEMOUTH: What happens if Cook and Francis get injured?

By -

Eddie Howe is a man who likes to get his transfer business done early, but with weeks to go to the start of the new season he still needs to reinforce the Cherries squad.

Young, gifted and full of potential would best describe Howe’s current acquisitions. If he is looking for goals, which he is, he has undoubtedly got a collection of raw talent to compliment the current squad.

But as we all know scoring goals wasn’t really the issue for AFC Bournemouth last season. It was letting them in that was the big deal. Heavy defeats against Man city, Spurs and Chelsea saw the Cherries goal difference plummet into the negative. We won’t be getting any 8-0 victories in the Premier League to boost up the difference.

So, the obvious next step for Eddie Howe is to invest in his defence. With Sylvain Distin and Tommy Elphick gone, there is very little cover at the back. Admittedly, neither would have been first choice, but both were admirable understudies with experience. Something that the AFC Bournemouth defence needs now.

“Who else could step into the breach? There is Tyrone Mings, Adam Smith and god forbid Rhoys Wiggins. None real candidates for central defence”

What will happen if Cook gets injured? What will happen if Francis gets injured? What will happen if they both get injured. What will happen is that we will have a makeshift defence with little experience that would probably just about make the grade in the Championship.

There is Billy Cargill, talented with little experience. There is Ake, again lacking in experience and central defence is not his preferred position. Who else could step into the breach? There is Tyrone Mings, Adam Smith and god forbid Rhoys Wiggins. None real candidates for central defence.

Steven Caulker and Nedum Onuoha, both of QPR have been touted as defensive replacements but both are Championship players. We don’t need promise we need someone, or someone’s, with a proven record, like Sylvain Distin or even Ian Harte. Both were in their senior years but both did a very good job when called upon.

So who can Eddie call? How about Thomas Vermaelen, experienced and never going to get in the Barcelona team. Could we afford him? Depends if he wants first football or not. Liverpool are said to be interested in him. So how about they take Vermaelenn and we take Kolo Toure. How about Marc Wilson? He’s versatile, has plenty of experience and has played for the Cherries before. How about Joey O’Brien? He’s been released from West Ham played in the Premier League, could be a useful back up.

If these do not fit the bill Eddie Howe undoubtedly needs to get someone in quick to add steel to our defence, otherwise we could be looking at more heavy defeats.
