Survival in the Cherries first ever season in the Premier League is an achievement to be admired.
We, AFC Bournemouth fans, always believed that we would be playing Premier League football for another season. But, as we all know there were plenty of doubters and it’s always good to prove them wrong.
To make sure that the Cherries stayed in the Premier League Eddie Howe needed to spend big, and he did. But, with big transfer fees come big wages. It’s no secret that the Cherries have a big wage bill (but small by Premier League standards). We also have a big squad, a squad with players who really won’t make the grade in the Premier League. So who should be on there way to free up space and money for new recruits. We kick-off with goalkeepers.
WHICH KEEPER HAS GOT TO GO?
Boruc, Federici and Allsop. In reality we could get rid of all of them. Boruc is the best of the lot, but for us he makes too many mistakes, he does make up for it on occasions – penalty save against West Brom – but would be a great number two.
TO GO: Federici, Allsop
A CASE FOR THE DEFENCE
We are short of defenders. Our favoured back four has to be Smith, Francis, Cook, Daniels. Outside these four we have Tommy Elphick, Bailey Cargill, Tyrone Mings and Sylvain Distin. Who has to go? Distin is the obvious choice. Are the others good enought for the Premier League? Elphick, yes, Mings and Cargill yet to be proven. We really could do with at least one more experienced defender. I know we have Rhoys Wiggins, f**k knows why, was it a charity move by Eddie Howe?
TO GO: Distin, Wiggins
TOO MANY MIDFIELDERS, NOT ENOUGH CLASS
We have a lot of midfielders, but AFC Bournemouth are not the same team when Arter and Surman don’t play together. Dan Gosling, simply doesn’t do it for us. Eunan O’Kane is OK as a backup, skillful and a good passer of the ball, we’d keep him. Elsewhere we have Shaun MacDonald and Lee Tomlin. They need to move on. Out on the wings we have Max Gradel, Marc Pugh, Matt Ritchie and Junior Stanislas. All should stay.
TO GO: MacDonald, Tomlin, Gosling
Strikers are key to sucess and the Cherries have a good selection. But, you only really need four strikers in any squad, so there is definitely a few surplus strikers who should really move on. Who should we keep? That’s easy-ish. Callum Wilson, Josh King and Benik Afobe are a definite for us. Lewis Grabban is the striker we would replace. Defoe anyone?. Unfortuantely, Glenn Murray’s move didn’t work out, though he did score against Chelsea, never forgotten. There is the forgotten man Tokelo Rantie. He’s never going to get in the squad so he has to go.
TO GO: Grabban, Rantie, Murray
