STEVE COOK: AFC Bournemouth defender talks to The South End

By -

Tales From The South End had the pleasure of talking with defender, Cherries legend and TFTSE Player of the season Steve Cook. He reveals his favourite goal, respect for Eddie Howe and the lack of birthday cakes from Maxim Denim

Q. The 2013/14 season was undoubtedly a success for AFCB. What was your personal highlight?
My personal highlight this year was probably winning the first game of the season. We were obviously confident but a lot of us hadn’t played in the championship and were a little bit anxious of how we would do.

Q. What was the best game you played in 2013/14?
My best game I had I thought was Blackpool at home. Even though we lost personally I was very pleased with how I played.

Q. What was the best goal of the season, apart from your own of course?
Best goal would be Grabs away at Bolton. Was an unbelievable strike at a time when we most needed it!

Q. Who has the best and worst banter in the dressing room?
Franno and h are very good together. But when Jayden’s about and not on loan his banter is outstanding. He’s very much missed when he’s not about. Worst is a tough one as we all enjoy each others company. Maybe Ryan Fraser as he is just a weirdo

Q. Eddie Howe is the boss. How does he motivate/inspire the team?
The gaffer has the respect of all the lads. The way he wants to play is fantastic and how hard he works is unbelievable. He knows everyone of the lads inside out and knows how to get the best out of them. He has made the team improve no end and we are all improving so that’s why we are heading in the right direction and will be successful together.

Q. How do you feel when an important member of the squad, like Lewis Grabban, leaves for pastures new?
Players leaving and coming is part of football. Grabs is a massive part of the team. On and off the pitch so if he does end up leaving he’ll be a big miss around the place and a huge miss on the pitch but hopefully we will be able to sign another striker who will link up with Yann and get us the goals we need.

Q. How successful do you think Bournemouth can/will be in the coming season?
The season coming is a massive one for the club and I think we will pick up from where we left off and reach new heights. Playoffs will definitely be our aim for the season.

Q. The club is currently being bankrolled by Mr Denim. Do the players ever get to meet him? Does he provide a birthday cake?
I’ve met him a few times but he likes to keep himself to himself and enjoy watching us. Which works extremely well in my opinion. But, no birthday cakes haha.

Q. The season finished at the beginning of May and starts again in August. What do you do with all that time off?
We usually go back to training at the end of June so we have about 6-7 weeks off. But the game has changed so much over the years so you always have to keep fit. I don’t do anything for 2 weeks when season finishes but then I’ll be in the gym and working with the fitness coach 2 3 times a week so I’ll be in good condition when pre season starts. With that I also enjoy a few holidays and relaxing with mates

Q. Finally, the big question is will you still be here come August 2014? The answer better be yes
Yes I very much expect so. As the club is going places and has grown so much since I’ve been here.
