STEVE COOK: Why isn’t the AFC Bournemouth defender getting picked by Gareth Southgate?

By -

The England team is hardly piled high with top-class, high quality international central defenders, and it seems the current England manager is giving our very own Steve Cook the cold shoulder.

A look at the stats (according to Oulala) and Steve Cook is one of the best English defender’s in Europe and high on the list for Premier League clearances. But, it seems Mr Southgate is not interested in stats or performances. A look at England’s centre-backs and it may be understandable why Cook doesn’t make the squad when all are fit. Cahill, Smalling and Stones will be hard to shift, Keane has staked his case for a place, but looking past these there is hope.

Phil Jones pulled out, but Southgate decided not to replace him. Why did he even get in the England team anyway. Don’t forget, he does play for Man United so he must be good. So good he fell for Pugh’s much used Cryuff turn :-).

You shouldn’t be picked on your history you should be picked on performances

Now Chris Samlling has pulled out of the squad, Who does Southgate call up? Ben Gibson from relegation candidates Middlesbrough. He’s obviously in cracking form playing in a defence-minded team that have conceded more goals than AFC Bournemouth.

So, what does Steve Cook have to do to get England recognition? His performances have been consistently good, he has been the outstanding defender in the Bournemouth back-four and very rarely lets his team down. Is it because he hasn’t played for England at International level and Ben Gbson has? Is it because Southgate knows Gibson better? Is it because he doesn’t know where Dean Court is?

You shouldn’t be picked on your history you should be picked on performances and Mr Southgate needs to get his ass down to Dean Court and see for himself on what he is missing out on. Give the man a chance.
