The opening day victory over Charlton was soon put into perspective as the Cherries suffered a humiliating 6-1 reverse at Watford. However, it wasn’t long before the Cherries were able to atone for their poor showing away from home.
Up next – the FA Cup holders and recently relegated Wigan Athletic. No longer was Mr Martinez in charge, but Mr Owen ‘Clogger’ Coyle. However, this was a team with Premiership player and experience and another stern challenge lay ahead. The atomsphere was cranked up to 10 and from the kick-off there was plenty of action.
The visitors showing why they used to be in the Premiership, but they couldn’t find a breakthrough. It was the Championship new boys who showed the visitors how it was done as Lewis Grabban raced on to a short backpass and slotted past the keeper to take the lead. The fun didn’t stop there, Brett Pitman was unceremoniously bundled over in the box and duly saw his penalty saved. To complete the day a straight red was produced for a poor foul on Pitman. And, it was long before Coyle said goodbye.
