CHECK OUT OUR SEASON REVIEW. ORIGINALLY WRITTEN FOR THE PADDY POWER BLOG
Saturday 27th April 2013, the day that Doncaster snatched away the League One title from the mighty Cherries in the most dramatic of circumstances. It was an anti-climax to what had been a sensational season, but, that final day had been in our own hands. A single goal at Tranmere would have seen Tommy Elphick lift aloft the championship trophy. But, we still got promotion and an open-top bus parade, just NO TROPHY, we’re not bitter… honest.
With last season now a fading memory, albeit a very happy one, the excitement of playing in the Championship is finally starting to kick-in. With a new stand, a sell-out crowd and Eddie Howe at the helm, life is good. One of Howe’s new additions, Mohamed Coulibaly, from Swiss side Grasshoppers, on a free, looks set to make a big impact. He is quick, direct and skilful, similar to Elliot Ward, another free transfer, from Norwich. With Premiership experience on his CV he will have the subtlety to stick a few strikers up in the air.
One striker that could do with a good kicking is our very own Wes Thomas. After knocking in a few goals he suddenly started to believe his own hype. But, after loan spells at Portsmouth, Blackpool and Birmingham, he found he wasn’t so hot after all. No-one wants him and that includes us. The ideal scenario would be for Wes Thomas to f**k off with Billy Sharp replacing him.
Life before the Championship saw the Cherries sink to the very depths of the Football League. So when I was asked the question, ‘Worst away ground in the Championship’ the first thought was have I been to any? A few and all have been good, but when you‘ve been to Aldershot, Exeter and Torquay any Championship ground is going to look good. With the exception of Leeds maybe, but, that’s all in the history.
Exciting times lay ahead and come May 3rd 2014, we can dream of the New Den wiping away the memories of Tranmere as we sing We’re on way, up the Football League we go once again, but this time with a trophy.
