Match Report: Grimsby (H) 3-1
PITMAN SECURES THREE MORE POINTS | Alan Connell’s sublime first of the season, an own goal and yet another spectacular finish from leading scorer Pitman keep Cherries top of the league.
The Cherries started slowly and were lucky to still be level as Grimsby front man Akpa Akpro shot wide of the target after rounding the keeper with the goal at his mercy. This gave the hosts a wake call as they slowly got into their stride. Alan Connell brought an excellent save from the Grimsby keeper, but minutes later the visitors were one down thanks to an excellent turn and volley into the top corner. It didn’t take long for the Cherries to double their lead as Pitman put in a low cross that saw Linwood put into his own net.
HALF TIME 2-0.
As the home side looked to build on their lead Grimsby handed themselves a lifeline as a Linwood header glanced off Ryan Garry to wrong foot Jalal. With a possible point as a reward the visitors started to impose themselves on the game. Striker Akpa Akpro had another gilt-edged opportunity but Jalal stood tall and managed to grab the ball. With around quarter of an hour left Howe replaced Connell with Fletcher, with one of his many flick-on’s producing a third for the Cherries. A spectacular bicycle kick from leading marksmen Brett Pitman with only three minutes left. This effectively killed the game and even with five minutes of injury time the visitors never looked like grabbing anything from the game.
GOALS: Connell 27, Linwood (og) 34, Pitman 87

MAN OF THE MATCH: Alan Connell | He worked his socks off and produced a cracking curler that was as good as Pitman’s contribution. Starting to look a good alternative to Fletch.
